Many people are thinking about their New Year resolution at this time. A year is such a long time to commit to! Veganuary offers the ideal of the New Year resolution but you need only commit for a month. OK, so what is it? The idea is you commit to eating a plant-based diet for the month of January. At the end of the month, you'll really know if you can go vegan. So how about it? How many people can we get in New Zealand to try Veganuary? Is it safe? Yes! Absolutely. Most people from 6 months to 120 years old are able to enjoy a healthy vegan diet. If you sign up to Veganuary, the website is full of useful and helpful information to make your January a pleasurable eating experience. There is lots of information on nutrition, recipes, a vegan starter kit, tips on eating out etc. There are news articles, books and videos explaining the whys of Veganism. There's also a section on myths, so please check that bit out if you've heard worrying things about how being vegan can kill you or your children. If it's done right, it is the most healthy diet on the planet. And no one has to die. There are so many reasons to try being vegan. There are numerous health benefits with some diseases even being reversed. Diabetes type 2 is famously reversed by a fully plant based diet. It has even been shown that many cancer fighting genes are turned on through following a vegan diet. There is no cholesterol in a vegan diet, so those on Lipitor can look forward to being able to throw those pills away by the end of the month, under supervision of their doctor. Cardiovascular disease is another one proven to reduce in vegans. Increasingly we are seeing more people becoming vegan to save the environment. Certainly huge resources are spent on feeding animals to feed humans, so by cutting out the middle man, we can be good to the planet too. Of course, it is the animals who benefit most, as they are no longer bred to be eaten. No more cages, no more artificial insemination, no more suffering and death for them. With some 65 billion animals being bred to eat globally, this would make huge savings in resources and suffering. So, why not give it a go? It's one of the fastest growing movements and rightly so. It just makes logical sense to eat this way. We no longer have a need to eat animals, so why do it? There are so many tasty plant-based meats out there already and more growing each year, there really has not been a better time to try it and see for yourself what all the fuss is about.
