Vegan milk and cream

Explore a healthy range of vegan milks - great for drinking, baking & cooking.

Buying vegan milk guide

We call them milks, but they certainly are not cow's milk - we leave that for the calves.

Milk is packed with natural growth hormones and is produced by cows to grow their babies into adults weighing around 600kg or more! There are so many alternatives to cows milk that it would take you a few weeks to buy and try them all. Many are located in the long life milk section in the supermarket, with a few also located in the fridge. You can use these as a replacement in baking, in your tea or coffee, with your cereal, in smoothies… basically anything you would have used cows milk for!

Tips for tea and coffee:
All plant based milks taste quite different so don’t give up if you don’t like the first one you try. It may take you a few weeks to get used to a different taste. You may find you no longer need to add sugar depending on the milk you try. If you have trouble with the milk not mixing with the hot drink, try heating the milk or leaving the milk poured in the cup while the coffee stands.

What's available in New Zealand?

Soy milk

There are so many brands of soy milk available, including a supermarket’s own brand. Try Vitasoy Soy Milky range for a taste similar to cows milk, or vanilla soy milks for a great taste in coffee. Watch out for Vitasoy Calci Plus – this isn’t vegan! it contains vitamin D from wool fat.

Oat milk

Oat Milk tastes pretty great in coffee and is one of the most popular alternative milks. New Zealand has a great range of oat milks for you to try, many now developed as barista oat milks!

Nut milk

Vegan nut milks are a fantastic addition in smoothies, baking, creating vegan cheese sauces, hot chocolate + more. Nice!

Rice milk

Rice milk is generally a thinner, lighter texture than soy milk. It is a delicious alternative for those who are unable to consume nut or soy-related milks.

Plant Milk

Other milk

Hemp, Almond & Coconut + more! There are lots of different types of non-dairy milk out there!

Stir Powdered Milk

Oat, soy, coconut milk powders, plus flat white, cappuccino, and hot chocolate almond milk powders. Available in most supermarkets.

Cream and sour cream

Alpro single cream is available in some supermarkets, as is Zenzo sour cream. You can also use a tin of coconut cream, any brand, probably thicker/higher coconut content the better, put it in the fridge to seperate the liquid and remove, whisk up the cream.

Whipped cream

Nature’s Charm sell this by the can and it’s usually found in supermarkets such as New World or at health food stores.
