August is Plant Milk Month!

Plant milks are becoming ever more popular even amongst non-vegans, which is great news for dairy cows. This year our cows are still protected by the previous government’s attempts to get them out of the mud over winter. Next year, they will be back in it, if the Fast Track Bill goes ahead ☹

Why is the dairy industry cruel to cows?

Some people are not aware that cows produce milk because they are mothers, rather than because they are cows. This means that babies are taken from their mothers and killed, if they are not “useful”, or put in a field/pen with other babies, to be brought into the dairy industry when they are of reproductive age, which is 2 years old. These babies are then fed reconstituted milk powder, rather than some of the milk their mothers produce!

Meanwhile the mothers are giving birth onto cold, wet mud, in the brunt of winter, which can be severe in many parts of the country. What a horrible beginning to a brutal life of servitude. Add in the huge amounts of water required to get a litre of milk into the supermarket, the pollution that occurs to our waterways and the large tracts of land that are required for the whole process, and it is clear that plant milks are the way to go.

Are plant milks better for the environment?

Plants are great for the environment, as they breathe in carbon dioxide and respire oxygen. Many of them can be grown with little fertiliser and pesticides, making them a better choice for your health and the planet. There are so many different plants that can be used to produce a delicious, healthy and nutritious drink, it’s simply a matter of taste.

There are even plant milk bases, concentrates of a nut or seed that, with the addition of water, means you can make as much or as little as you need for each day. There are even special plant milk blenders that claim to deliver the perfect plant milk from a handful of ingredients.

Whichever plant milk you choose, you will be doing your health, your planet and the dairy cows a big favour.

Plant Milk in your Work Place

It has been raised with us that vegan/plant based employees often find their work place employers providing cow’s milk in staff rooms, or there may be a staff kitty that goes towards the provision of tea/coffee/milk, and that generally only cow’s milk is provided.

We’ve provided below a couple of email templates for you to copy and paste, to use as a base for an email to your HR/employer, respectfully requesting a more balanced approach.
