March is Nutrition Month

March is the month where we celebrate and focus on the nutritional aspects of veganism. It has been shown that we can get our nutrients from plants. We recommend having a mostly wholefood plant-based diet, which avoids processed and junk food, even if it is plantbased, as that is the most healthy way to eat.

There have been a number of movies recently showing how eating a plant-based diet can be beneficial for your body. Did you see the recent Netflix doco about twins?  “You Are What You Eat” may not be a perfect study but it showed that it is easy to pile on weight and suffer malnutrition by eating too much junk food, especially if it is animal product based, and therefore higher in cholesterol and saturated fat.

100% plant-based diets have been shown to reduce cholesterol, lower blood pressure and reduce your risk of various cancers, including bowel and breast cancers.

A study done by Nobel Prizewinner Elizabeth Blackburn found that a vegan diet caused more than 500 genes to change in 3 months – turning ON genes that prevent disease and turning OFF genes that cause cancer, heart disease and other illnesses.

People who follow a plant-based diet burn calories 16% faster on average than meat-eaters.
Vegans get plenty of calcium. Pulses, sesame seeds, green leafy veg and plant-based milks all contain calcium.
There are over 79 million vegans in the world as of January 2023.
Vegans eat plenty of protein: lentils, beans, mushrooms, broccoli, soya and peas can contain more protein than meat!

Have you challenged a friend or family member to try vegan for 21 days yet? Perhaps this is the time to ask? The Vegan Society is challenging our Health and shadow Health Ministers to try our Easy Vegan challenge, as part of our annual  Challenge a VIP!

One might think that Health Ministers should set an example to the country, so let’s see if they take this opportunity to jump on a challenge to live a healthier lifestyle.
