In 2018, Joseph Poore published the most extensive global food system analysis to date. His groundbreaking research, which features in the IPCC’s 6th Assessment exposes the inefficiency of the current food system, with meat and dairy providing just 18% of calories despite using 83% of farmland and producing 60% of farming’s greenhouse gas emissions. He found that a plant-based food system would reduce global farmland by more than 75%, freeing up vast areas of land for rewilding.
